"Sanskriti", in it equivalent English translation as "Culture" or "Civilisation" does not convey the exact meaning of the word.

In Sindhi and all other Indian languages, word "Sanskriti" denotes the feminine gender. Normally there are no grammatical rules, which dictate how to identify the gender of inanimate objects. It is felt, some unknown and collective social consciousness might have played the role of deciding the word "Sanskriti" as a feminine gender in Sindhi and other Indian language. Generally small, soft, brittle, beautiful and subtle are considered feminine gender. For example small box (dabili), stick (lakiri), neck (gichi), beauty (sunhan), art (kala) etc. And those big, fat, hard and immovable are described masculine gender. For example big box (dabilo), log (bundu), pomp (dabu dabo), show off (dekhau) etc.

Sanskriti is soft and subtle longing of the society, which is intimately related to the Women. It is therefore quite possible that due to some unknown thought process, the word "Sanskriti" has feminine gender in Sindhi and other Indian languages.

Society, civilization and Sanskriti or culture have very intimate relationship with each other, which in turn has very close relationship with women.

After the formation of society, civilization evolved. The finer points of civilization are known as "Sanskriti" or "Culture".

Man started his life as a nomad and a hunter. During the next stage of evolution, he settled on the river banks with agriculture as his mainstay.Woman played the main role in his evolution. Because of her natural biological need of child rearing, it was difficult for her to lead a nomadic life. She required settled and peaceful environment to contribute to the continuation and proliferation of her progeny. Woman thus became the starting point and the cause of the civilization and culture.

Man by nature is a nomad. He does not have attachment with a particular soil. Woman other hand is different. She is rooted to the soil, the heart-rending cry that emanates from inner soul of "Marui" for her native land "Maleer" is unthinkable from a "Maru". A girl always longs to see her village, her kith and Kim and her family. Whereas a man hardly displays the same feelings. Even today we see the social customs, rituals, festivals and fasts etc. are observed strictly by women.

It is therefore essential that to protect and propogage "Sindhi Sanskriti" the woman power should be awakened.
