Fellow Global Sindhis, lend me your ears!
I have come across this very interesting topic of discussion and could not resist sharing it with you.

There seems to be a good amount of similarity between The Sindhi and Italian way of life, could there be a connection?

Apart from the most well known fact that our surnames end in "ani", even the Italian and Sindhi cuisine has a lot of Similarity. Did you know that the authentic Italian Pizza has two main flavors ¡Ocimum -(Tulsi) and pepper only? (Cheese Pizza is an American invention) Pepper is an integral part of the Sindhi cuisine and no Sindhi can survive without the three Ps! Pakoras, Papad and Peppermint!

Some even say the Italians and Sindhi¡¦s are two races you can differentiate by their most distinguishing character - straight noses (have not seen may Italians so cannot comment on that:)

The reason people say is the extensive trade in olden times between the ports of Karachi and Venice,

Last but not the least Sindh and Venice have a very interesting similarity, some of the best canal systems in the world.

What do you feel about this??

Interesting Nihal!

To bring home the point, 'Aileen Wortley' in his essay ‘THE SINDHI HINDU POPULATION: FOREIGN INFLUENCES ON THEIR CULTURE’ says:

that it is important to be aware of the history of Sind much of which is a story of continual invasion. It is now known that Sind boasts a civilization at least as old as that of Ancient Egypt. Sindhi culture is not merely a few hundred years old but dates back to around 8,000 BC

To be able to understand this, it is important to be aware of the history of Sind much of which is a story of continual invasion.

Inevitably each and every one of these invading peoples have had an influence upon the economic, cultural and linguistic features of the Sindhi whether Muslem or Hindu.

Somehow the Sindhi Hindus have absorbed into the melting pot of their culture many features of the diverse races and religions which penetrated Sind. Somehow they not only managed to survive attacks but to a certain extent benefited by the assimilation.

Its disadvantages, according to 'Jethmal Gulrajani', is that the Sindhi Hindus never built up an individuality in their culture which results from a concentration of forces. There is no real clear-cut individuality in matters of religion or caste. Instead they are like blotting paper who have absorbed whatever comes their way and seems to be an expedient adaptation.

There must be some book about the History and Antecedents of Sindhis? Please let me know if someone has come across a good book.

As far as italians and we go, having spent some time in Italy, there are similarities which I noticed!

Thanks Manish, for broaching an interesting topic, and Pushpa for her inputs. I am always amazed to know about the evolution and trivia of our culture and tradition.

On similarities between Sindhis and Italians!
Once Bob Hope, the famous comic, in a lighter vein, had mentioned that Italians have this extra muscle. When they talk their hands move!

I don't think we have it. Guess the Italians evolved differently.

Dear Manish,

It would be crass not to thank you for the book and the map. Beautiful.

My paternal grandparents were from dhooee ghitti in Hyderabad (Bhavnanis) and my maternal grandparents were form Clifton in Karachi (Shivdasanis). A friend saw our house and said he almost fainted. It housed a joint family of twenty five couples and their kids. An aangan in the middle, a common kitchen and lots of fun for the kids.

BTW, have any of you visited the sindhi site called dalsubzi.com ?

best

Rajan
