On our Indian Most Famous Comedy Show Laughter Challenge, now has a Sindhi to entertain. Coming from a small village called Nagod, Ashok Sundarani had second thoughts when he had to compete with most famous comedian Amanulla Khan. But with the encouragement from Friends and Family he competed with him.

Also I like to see Rajeev Masand On TV, love the way he interviews film stars

Rajeev Masand is the entertainment editor of CNN-IBN has been in the industry since 14 years. Be it interviewing the biggest stars of the country, assigning stories to reporters; striving to provide the best entertainment to his viewers, meeting deadlines or writing scripts for his own shows, Rajeev Masand is truly a one man army journalist…

Joy Mahbubani

Joy Mahbubani describes herself as a proud advocate of XL. Joy explains that the XL Social Enterprise Accreditation program is a great vehicle for creating awareness. "It's an accreditation where you know you have achieved something. It is not just money that has been given away. You benefit, your nominated cause benefits, and there is a sense of achievement. Sometimes what we want to feel is this sense of achievement.

She has benefited financially from being an XL Life Member - but more importantly, she has found her confidence and established strong relationships with other Life Members.

Joy has achieved phenomenal success during the last twelve months. "My biggest achievement would have been my work with Jeff in Africa. What we are doing currently is providing water and raising money to build a school. So Jeff and I really want to raise awareness to tell people that there are small projects like this that they can get involved in.

Throughout 2007, Joy is committed to continuing her work with the mission in Africa. She also plans to create a book entitled 'The Women of Excellence'. Due for launch by the end of the year, its purpose is to offer support and hope to women.

Joy explains by saying, "I want women to know that there are others like them. Because sometimes we feel so alone, and we think we are the only one like that."

Akhil, one of most connected young entrepreneurs in India, wants to help entrepreneurs become even more successful. "Although some statistics show that many new businesses fail in the first five years," he says, "I believe that with education, experience and planning, that trend can be reversed." Maya Shahani

Maya Shahani is the founding Director and Chairperson of the SAGE Foundation, which imparts enlightened education and social empowerment for creating extraordinary lives. Besides working in synergy with Life Members to promote education in India, she also works on various Life Members' projects in other countries.

During 2006, her achievements included being in the top three at September's EBS; launching SAGE Foundation to a global platform; generating pledges to SAGE through XL's Social Enterprise Accreditation Program; and adopting 94 villages to implement the SAGE model. This year's goals, she says, "centres around nurturing the 94 adopted villages, bringing education to children there, and creating craft communities so parents can generate a regular income."

Already a successful social entrepreneur, Maya feels XL has supported her to become even better by widening her horizons and 'getting her out of her boat'! "I now have a friend in every city in the world!" Maya says - and her illusion of limited resources has been replaced by knowing she has no restrictions in what she can achieve.

Maya asserts, " Be positive, learn to give without any expectations, and you get more in return! People in XL really help."

Gucci, Murjani Group

India's 36 billionaires and over 1 lakh high net worth individuals might queue up in south Mumbai in about a week.

It is because the world's largest selling Italian luxury brand, Gucci, is about to move into a swanky flagship store there.

Gucci will set up its flagship store for India. The Murjani Group will bring to India, Gucci, which AC Nielsen has rated as India's most desirable brand.

“In the luxury space we have Gucci, Jimmy Choo and La Perla. India's fascination for luxury is only growing,” says MD, Murjani Group, Vijay Murjani.

Luxury brands are growing popular in India because of India's unprecedented economic growth in the past few years.

The Murjanis have already brought to India premium brands including Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klien and FCUK but they are in no hurry to expand geographically.

“It is not important to have the most number of stores in luxury. It is important to have the best stores,” says Murjani.

So a 3,000 square foot space that looks like a construction site, will transform itself into a one of its kind luxury destination with Gucci, and the luxury retail market in India will finally start a new chapter

Sindhu Mansukhani

A ninth grader of Sindhi community has won the best actress award in the one-act play segment.

A bunch of teens from Bharati Vidyapeeth High School, CBD returned home, armed with international acclaim from New Delhi. The student artists have made their school and the city proud after having won top honors at the recently concluded International Children’s Festival, organized by Ryan International Group and Bal Bhavan, held at different venues in the capital.

Over 2,000 young actors from around a hundred schools across the country and abroad, took part in the prestigious festival. Apart from Indian students, students from over 17 countries were in the fray to prove their acting and dancing prowess.

Though it was a tough contest for the coveted title run-up, Sindhu Mansukhani was the center of attention among those who performed in her specialized one-act play. “I am from an acting background, which is why I made this task possible. My mother is a good stage performer, who left acting only a few years back. Besides, my father was a well-known dramatist who breathed his last three years ago. This inspired me to pursue serious acting. I did not expect the top honor amidst great challenges but it came as a surprise. I owe the credit to my family, teachers and principal,” said Sindhu Mansukhani.

Its wonderful reading this link... thank you Pushpa for your postings. Wadhwani Foundation is another one I wanted to list.. the amount of work they are doing in the feild of Social Entrepreneurship is wonderful.
And on that note... Benazir Bhutto... she was a wonderful sindhi stalwart too...even if she was across borders ...and left us with a mixed legacy of sorts.

Thank you Sanya.....I would be interested to read what Wadhwani Foundation is doing? Where are they based?

Also Benazir Bhutto death is a tragedy and a great loss. This is the poem I wrote on the day she was shot

Benazir Bhutto Assassinated

The world is sobbing
Oh! Such a disgrace
They end the life of a
Woman of grace
In exile she lived
For many years
She returned to give back
The freedom to her world
But blood thirsty, cruel
Senseless gents
Knew not how to handle her verse
They slit her throat
And now are cursed
behind a facade
a false story they flush.

Will they be able to celebrate this awful bloodshed?
Or will they now hide behind a feeble cover-up?

Is it right? Should we fight?
My heart now bleeds as I write.

RE: The Wadhwaani Foundation is a Not for Profit organization set up by Romesh Wadhwani who is its President & Chairman. Fueled by the belief that the economic greatness of a country is fueled by the strength and vitality of its entrepreneurs its sole task is building entrepreneurs and with its work inspire, educate and support new entrepreneurs, and create environments where they can succeed. www.wadhwani-foundation.org/aboutus.htm
RE: Benazir Bhutto. Nice Poem. Sadly I cannot weep for the one who passes away... she knows no pain. Its her young family for whom I grieve. They will be puppets in the hand of an over ambitious father and political groups.
Ms Bhutto's policy and political ambition is what she paid a price for. And even though I remember her ruthlessness and the way she plundered her own country, featured in the killings of her own kith and kin....I deplore the need of political insecurities that took her life in a less than sincere manner.
Today I pay my respect to the woman who underwent extremely terrible times before she turned into what she became. A victim of the political system.... but a daughter of a Sindhi traditionalist

Yes Benazir was graceful woman. But, when I saw and heard her last 20 minutes speech at "Liyaqat baug" has diluted her image in my senses.
The way she spewed the poison for Indian Nuclear programm was something you can shun at this stage. Economy is showing considerable progress and when Pakistan is talking abt Nucler... mismatch, instead she could have talked abt friendliness approach and making bridges.
Anyway, that's my view.
Like your poem.

Hi Saniya,

In my opinion this is not the right time to criticize late Benazir's comments about nuclear programme of India when everyone is mourning on her death. Whatever is happening to Pakistan or India's nuclear programme we sindhi's have no profit or loss. She was a wonderfull lady and did considerably a lot about sindh and sindhi's in Pakistan. Moreover she is prominantly recognized as sindhi that we should be proud of.

Anyway everyone has a right to put his own point of view. I felt sad and as a sindhi its natural.Life goes on....

Former premier Benazir Bhutto is to be posthumously awarded Ireland’s 2007 Tipperary Peace Prize, the organizers said on Tuesday.

Benazir was recognized for her “courageous” work for democracy and reconciliation, said the Tipperary Peace Convention, which has in the past honoured South Africa’s Nelson Mandela and Live Aid organiser Bob Geldof.

“Benazir fought all her battles through dialogue and was an example to all those who do not use or surrender to terrorism,” it said in a statement.

“Her selection as Peace Prize recipient should act as an inspiration to those in Pakistan who seek to secure democracy and reconciliation for their country,” it added.

The convention said the accolade was to “recognize the very difficult path towards peace and democracy in Pakistan and the ultimate sacrifice made by Benazir in her campaign to put her country back on democracy”.

“She was an incredibly brave and courageous woman who had returned from exile to her homeland to lead her party in the forthcoming elections,” it said.

L K Advani

LK Advani's autobiography 'My Country My Life' was released with much fanfare on Wednesday at a high-profile function that virtually saw his launch as the NDA's prime ministerial candidate for the next round of parliamentary elections.

The over 1,000-page volume ‘My Country My Life’ covers all the major and minor events in the life of Advani, like his joining the RSS, trauma of Partition, meeting with Atal Bihari Vajpayee, days of the Jana Sangh, Emergency, Ayodhya, Rath Yatra, his stint in the government as Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, Agra Summit, Kargil, Terrorism, Controversy surrounding Jinnah remark, and so on. The best part of the book is that Advani has taken the perspective of a participant, and not a historian, while writing it.

The evening saw Jaswant Singh putting up a strong defense in favor of Advani while enumerating his qualities of head and heart. "I believe Advaniji is the one of the most misread and misrepresented leaders in today's politics … He is far removed from being a breaker of mosques or any such thing," he asserted.

Recalling the evening of December 6, 1992, when the destruction of the Babri mosque had disturbed him, Singh said Advani called him up regretting that the "party which was leading the campaign had lost its sense of discipline". He described the book as a "path breaker" and a "valuable addition" to India's political and social history over the past several decades.

"… Mirrored in this book is the remarkable journey of a sensitive human being and an outstanding leader whose best, I hope, is yet to come," wrote former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who could not attend the function due to ill-health.

AMIDST THE thousands of documentaries pitched at Cannes, Eastern filmmakers are making a mark. Dubai’s own Soniya Kirpalani won the Co Production Challenge for her project ‘Threads of Tradition’.A six-part series about the heartwarming journeys of five leading Asian fashion design icons, it reflects the struggle of the design fraternity as they try to save the fabric of tradition being bleached by a new wave of commercial colonialism.

When asked what it felt like winning at Cannes she says, "A feeling of gratefulness washed over me. It’s a real honour which I seek to live up to."
